Van Buren Tech alum Josh Vochaska, a graduate of South Haven Public Schools, attended the Culinary Arts & Catering Management program during his junior and senior years (2005–2006). He was named Van Buren Tech Student of the Year in 2006 and received scholarship funding toward culinary school through ProStart.
Today, Josh owns and operates Unique Catering Solutions, a private chef catering business focused on in-home dining experiences for groups of 30 people or fewer. His wife owns PAINT HAVEN, an art studio offering private painting classes and events, where Josh provides small plates and refreshments through his catering business. Together, they are in the process of purchasing Six Chicks Scratch Kitchen, a breakfast-and-lunch American-cuisine restaurant in South Haven.
One of Josh’s favorite aspects of Tech was collaborating with students from different schools who shared similar interests and goals, creating a sense of camaraderie rather than competition. He also valued the hands-on learning environment, which allowed him to gain experience through active participation rather than traditional textbook instruction.
Nearly 20 years later, Josh still stays in touch with his instructor, Patti Kentworthy, and has recently returned to mentor current Culinary Arts & Catering Management students as they prepare for the Michigan ProStart Competition. Reflecting on his time at Tech, Josh encourages students to take advantage of all the opportunities Van Buren Tech offers: “If you have any interest, give it a try. You’ll build real skills, confidence, and experience that stay with you long after high school.”
