The Sylvester siblings each discovered their passion through Van Buren Tech’s programs, building a strong foundation for their futures.
Zach Sylvester: Class of 2022 (Mattawan)
Zach’s interest in skilled trades led him to Van Buren Tech’s Welding program. Stepping beyond a traditional classroom, Zach found an environment where hands-on learning fueled his passion. Inspired by his older brother’s experience, Zach embraced the opportunities Tech offered. He is currently completing a summer welding internship. He is earning his degree in management with a minor in welding at Northern Michigan University. His goal is to turn his hands-on training from Tech and college into a thriving business of his own.
Addie Sylvester: Class of 2025 (Mattawan)
Initially drawn to the medical field, Addie’s visit to the Engineering Design and Architecture Design program changed her course. She discovered a deeper interest and excitement for design and problem-solving. Addie credits Van Buren Tech with giving her a head start on college and career readiness. Last summer, she completed an architecture internship and will begin studying architecture at Lawrence Technological University this fall. She appreciates the hands-on learning and the support she received from her instructor, Joshua Bridges.
Nate Sylvester: Class of 2020 (Mattawan)
Nate’s passion for building and problem-solving grew from his early experiences working with his grandpa on the farm. He continued to build on these skills in Van Buren Tech’s Advanced Manufacturing program. Under the guidance of instructor Gabriel Kooyers, he gained valuable lessons in professionalism and hard work. The hands-on approach solidified his love for mechanical engineering and prepared him for the challenges of college-level studies. Now pursuing a Mechanical Engineering Technology degree at Northern Michigan University, Nate applies the skills learned at Tech daily through internships at Singh Automation. His enthusiasm for the program inspired his siblings to follow his path.
A Family’s Perspective
Lisa Sylvester, their mom, says the family supported Van Buren Tech because the programs matched each child’s unique interests. She reflected on their enthusiasm for sharing daily experiences, the encouragement from skilled instructors, and the strong connections they built across the county. Lisa strongly recommends Van Buren Tech as a place where hands-on learning meets real-world preparation. She takes pride in how the programs helped her children gain confidence, direction, and a competitive edge in college and beyond. Lisa found the programs to be closely aligned with today’s business and career demands, providing students with a solid foundation for future success.
