The Annual Mock Disaster event, hosted by Van Buren Tech, the Career and Technical Education (CTE) center of the Van Buren Intermediate School District (VBISD), brought learning to life through a high-impact, hands-on emergency simulation.
This year’s scenario was as ambitious as it was immersive: a simulated plane crash into a bustling flea market, complete with smoke, fire, chaos, and dozens of injuries. As the sirens blared, students jumped into action, demonstrating calm under pressure and real-time crisis response skills.
CTE students from EMT, Fire Science Academy, Law Enforcement, Patient Care, and Cosmetology programs collaborated with local first responders and public safety agencies to lead a coordinated, multi-agency response effort. From triage and rescue to scene management and injury simulation makeup, students played critical roles in every aspect of the emergency.
“This isn’t just a drill—it’s a capstone experience that showcases everything students have learned, academically, technically, and emotionally,” said Andrea Robinson, Principal of Van Buren Tech. “It prepares them for high-demand careers with competence and confidence.”
VBISD was honored to welcome special guests, including:
-The VBISD Board of Education
-Candace Vinson, Michigan Department of Education, Office of Career and Technical Education
-Representatives from MLive, Kalamazoo Gazette, and South Haven Tribune
-Van Buren County Sheriff Dan Abbott and Undersheriff Casey Davis
-Dan’s Automotive & Mike’s Towing
-And a HUGE heartfelt thank you to the local first responders, MSP, public safety departments, and volunteers for generously donating their time, expertise, and mentorship to support VBT students’ learning.
Thank you to all who participated and supported this powerful educational experience. Events like Mock Disaster represent the heart of CTE: learning by doing, working together, and preparing for life beyond the classroom.
