VBISD Honors School Bus Drivers' Excellence and Dedication at Annual Bus Roadeo Competition
Lawrence, MI- On Saturday, April 26, 2025, the Van Buren Intermediate School District
(VBISD) proudly hosted a Bus Roadeo- a spirited and skill-driven competition that celebrates
the critical role school bus drivers play in student safety and school operations. The event was
organized by the VBISD Transportation Department, under the leadership of Terry Lechenet, and
welcomed over 40 bus drivers from across southwest Michigan.
Held across the Learning Center, VBISD Transportation, and VB Tech’s parking facilities, the
Roadeo tested drivers in a series of rigorous challenges including obstacle navigation, tight turns,
simulated student pick-up and drop-off procedures, safety checks, and a comprehensive written
exam. Beyond competition, the event served as a powerful training opportunity- reinforcing
safety standards, precision driving, and professional awareness.
This year’s event was especially meaningful, as nearly all VBISD drivers placed in the top ten
rankings, a testament to their skill, preparation, and unwavering commitment to student safety.
We’re proud to announce that all three top awards were claimed by VBISD drivers:
● 1st Place: Melanie Cheek
● 2nd Place: Autumn Stevens
● 3rd Place: Robert Mead
Volunteers played an essential role in the day’s success, assisting with course setup, scoring, and
station judging. Participants and guests were treated to lunch and door prizes as final scores were
calculated.
