Program for Students with Severe Multiple Impairments

Most students in our Program for Severe Multiple Impairments require extensive personal and health care in addition to daily instruction.  The focus for our students is to maximize their ability to participate in both functional academics and daily living activities. Functional academics include reading, writing, mathematics, social studies, and science.  Daily living skills include personal care, social interaction skills, communication skills, and many others.  These subjects are presented in a highly modified way with many unique strategies and adaptations to enable students to participate in learning activities at a level suitable to their abilities and needs.  Students receive instruction and intensive supports in the areas outlined in the Participation Curriculum.  Students in the SXI Program are generally expected to become participants in home and community activities, but will require extensive personal care and assistance throughout their lives.

The BGLC SXI Program is departmentalized so that our teachers may collaborate and share instructional responsibilities if appropriate to address each student’s unique learning needs. Our SXI teachers and students are supported as needed by a team of ancillary staff that consists of school nurse, school psychologist, school social worker, speech therapist, occupational therapist, physical therapist, teacher consultant for visual impairments, teacher consultant for hearing impairments, and audiologist.

There are many social learning opportunities provided to our students, such as school dances, proms, fundraisers, Special Olympics, and community based learning activities. As appropriate, our oldest students participate in work experiences that exist on our VBISD campus including Greenhouse, Papermaking, and Recycling.  Students participate in adaptive physical education, fitness, and pool weekly.
