Career Readiness
Career Readiness is a one year, VBISD secondary special education transition program located in the Van Buren Technology Center. The program is divided into two, half-day sections: Transitions and Outlooks. Career Readiness offers a variety of classroom and work-based activities focused around post-secondary education and training, daily living skills, community participation, and career training and employability. Students practice completing job applications, develop job related skills and explore job opportunities in Career and Technical Education Programs or on-site work-based learning. Students are also introduced to self-management and adult living skills such as cooking, laundry, scheduling appointments and budgeting.
Post Secondary Education and Training
Students research a variety of education, training and employment options following high school. They develop and write their own IEP transition goals.
Daily Living
Students review basic cooking, money management, hygiene, and household maintenance skills. They also learn to utilize public transportation services and connect with community agencies.
Community Participation
Students patron a local grocery store, bank, library, and restaurant. They also have the opportunity to participate in a social event each year.
Employability and Career Training
Students create a resume, practice situationally specific employability skills, fill out job applications, and participate in mock interviews. They also visit the Career Transition Center and Michigan Career and Technical Institute.
