Welding > Tools and Skills

The following is a list of tools and skills that a Welding student will learn:

Skills:

Traditional welding process used in industry and taught at the Van Buren Technology Center are for the most part taught in all positions in that the student would learn to weld a flat, vertical, horizontal and overhead positions where the welding permits out of position welding.

Traditional Welding Processes:

  • Shielded metal arc welding beginning and advanced (stick)
  • Gas metal arc welding (mig) beginning and advanced
  • Flux cored arc welding
  • Gas tungsten arc welding (tig)
  • Oxy-fuel cutting, brazing, soldering
  • Plasma arc cutting
  • Submerged arc welding
  • Metal fabricating equipment:  Hydro-mechanical shears, Breaks, and May hand and power tools common to the

Automated welding process training:  (for the pre-Engineer)

  • Training in plasma and oxy-fuel cutting on computer controlled The Burny 10 CNC controller is an industrial standard and is the current state of the art in CNC cutting machines.
  • Sigmanest latest CAD/CAM cutting soft ware that allows the automatic “nesting” of several parts in one sheet.
  • Robotic welding cell with a actual industrial welding robot and welding Power source to train welders in basic robot programming and weld fixturing of welding processes.

Skills that are standard for all metal fabricating trades taught at the Technology center-welding program:

  • Shielded metal arc welding, Gas metal arc welding, Flux cored arc welding, Gas tungsten arc welding, Oxy-fuel cutting and brazing and soldering, Plasma cutting, Submerged arc welding.
  • Blue print for welders and welding symbols.
  • Welder’s math, Metric math.
  • Communication and team work skills
  • Job getting skills:  interviewing, résumé’s, etc.
  • Fabrication projects.

Tools:

You’re choosing to train for a welding career at the Van Buren technology center will expose you to state of the art arc welding equipment and training techniques.  The latest welding power sources for welding are used.   Up to date training materials will help you to progress at an accelerated rate.  The welding texts are combined with videos to help you understand each required training step towards your welding goals.
