Career Academies

An Academy is a special program offered through the Van Buren Technology Center in cooperation with local community colleges.  Qualified students have the opportunity to earn both college and high school credit and develop technical skills leading to a career.  Academies provide students with a head start into specific college programs.

Opportunities include:
  • Earn college credits at little or no cost
  • Learn technical skills on the latest high-tech equipment
  • Use academic and technical skills as a means of achieving better employment
  • Earn income to complete college training
  • Have classes in a convenient time block (morning or afternoon)
  • Have free transportation or drive (with school consent)
Criteria for enrollment in Career Academies:
  • Minimum 2.5 GPA
  • Good attendance
  • Successfully pass college math and reading entrance  exam
  • Transportation to work site
  • Meet local school requirements for dual enrollment

College credits may be earned through area colleges depending on the specific program offered by each college.  For example, only KVCC has a program in Plastics; therefore credits for the Plastics Academy are earned through KVCC.  Often, credits are transferable to other colleges.
