Thank You Letter

Job Placement > VBTC Job Seeking Guide > Writing a "Thank you" letter

Surprisingly, fewer than half the people who go on a job interview send the manager a note thanking him/her for taking time to interview them for a job. A simple thank you note could help you stand out from the competition.  Besides, it's the polite thing to do. A thank you note will keep your name alive in the manager's mind and it will tell the manager that you want this job so much that you took the time to write. This could trigger a request for a second interview or it may be just the extra little something to get you a job offer! Promptness is key! Your thank you note should arrive within two days. To be fully prepared, you may consider writing your thank you note before the actual interview so all you have to do is mail it out afterwards. Below is a guide for making a thank you note.

[Use standard business letter format with salutation.]
Dear Ms. Jacobson:

[Remind the manager of when and why you met and confirm that you want the job.] Thank you for meeting with me on Tuesday to explore career opportunities as a drafter in your department. I would like to confirm that I definitely want the job.

[Express enthusiasm.]
After meeting with you, I am even more excited about working in your organization. I am confident that I could quickly become a productive member of your staff.

[Explain that you'd like to follow-up.]
If I may, let me call you next week to see if you have made a decision, or to answer any new questions you might have.

[Close your letter.]
Sincerely,

[Sign your name in blue or black ink.]
