The Greeting:
When you meet and greet the receptionist or
interviewer, be sure to do the following:
- Smile.
- Establish eye contact.
- Offer a firm, confident handshake.
- When you introduce yourself to the office assistant, be sure to:
- Start with a greeting such as "good morning" or a simple
"hello."
- If known, use his/her name with a title (Mr., Mrs., or Ms.).
- State your own name slowly-"My name is…"
- Indicate your affiliation (person or organization who referred
you)-"Ms. Bryant at the Van Buren Tech Center referred me to you."
- Indicate your purpose-"I am here to interview with Mr.
Gonzalez."
- Concentrate on remembering the names of people to whom you are
introduced.

Demonstrate poise and confidence:
Body language
- Sit only after the interviewer has asked you to do so.
- Sit up straight, but slightly lean forward to show you are
interested-do NOT lean on the interviewer's desk though.
- Keep feet flat on the floor, one slightly in front of the other.
- Face the interviewer squarely.
- Do not cross your arms in front of you.

Paying attention
- Make frequent eye contact.
- Avoid nervous habits, such as chewing gum or playing with your
hair, jewelry or clothing.
- Keep a pleasant look on your face-not a constant or phony smile.

Voice quality
- Speak slowly and distinctly.
- Speak with complete thoughts-not with half sentences.
- Avoid saying "um," "okay," "you know," "understand," "know what
I'm saying."
- Avoid slang and informal words such as "yeah" instead of "yes"
and "nope" instead of "no."
