The Greeting:

When you meet and greet the receptionist or interviewer, be sure to do the following:
  • Smile.
  • Establish eye contact.
  • Offer a firm, confident handshake.
  • When you introduce yourself to the office assistant, be sure to:
    • Start with a greeting such as "good morning" or a simple "hello."
    • If known, use his/her name with a title (Mr., Mrs., or Ms.).
    • State your own name slowly-"My name is…"
    • Indicate your affiliation (person or organization who referred you)-"Ms. Bryant at the Van Buren Tech Center referred me to you."
    • Indicate your purpose-"I am here to interview with Mr. Gonzalez."
  • Concentrate on remembering the names of people to whom you are introduced.

Demonstrate poise and confidence:

Body language
  • Sit only after the interviewer has asked you to do so.
  • Sit up straight, but slightly lean forward to show you are interested-do NOT lean on the interviewer's desk though.
  • Keep feet flat on the floor, one slightly in front of the other.
  • Face the interviewer squarely.
  • Do not cross your arms in front of you.
Paying attention
  • Make frequent eye contact.
  • Avoid nervous habits, such as chewing gum or playing with your hair, jewelry or clothing.
  • Keep a pleasant look on your face-not a constant or phony smile.
Voice quality
  • Speak slowly and distinctly.
  • Speak with complete thoughts-not with half sentences.
  • Avoid saying "um," "okay," "you know," "understand," "know what I'm saying."
  • Avoid slang and informal words such as "yeah" instead of "yes" and "nope" instead of "no."
