Evaluation

Once your child has been referred to the appropriate evaluation program, he/she will be tested to determine and identify any impairment.  If your child is found to have difficulty in a certain area that affects his/her education and has been identified as impaired, he may qualify for special education services under the following categories:
Category Description
Autism Spectrum Disorder (AI) Impairment in the areas of reciprocal social interactions, communication skills, and stereotyped and repetitive behaviors
Deaf-Blindness Severe communication and other developmental delays, may not meet requirements under HI or VI
Emotionally Impairment (EI) Behavior interferes with learning
Hearing Impairment (HI) Deaf and hard of hearing
Learning Disability (LD) Disorders in the process of learning
Cognitive Impairment (CI) Delay in cognitive development
Other Health Impairment (OHI) Chronic or acute health problems resulting in limited strength, vitality or alertness
Physical Impairment (PI) Severe orthopedic impairment
Early Childhood Developmental Delay (ECDD) Ages birth through 7, delay in development cannot be identified under any other category
Severely Multiple Impairment (SXI) Multiple cognitive, physical or sensory impairments
Speech and Language Impairment (SLI) Underdeveloped appropriate speech and language
Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Brain injury caused by external physical force
Visual Impairment (VI) Blind or partially sighted.
