Teacher Consultants for the Visually Impaired provide students with instruction in the use of adaptive equipment as well as specialized teaching techniques.  VBISD employs two Teacher Consultants for the Visually Impaired.  These two professional staff are available to serve students in all of our eleven local school districts.

Teacher Consultants for the Visually Impaired work together to assess and preview a large number of low vision aids.  A low vision assessment kit has been assembled which allows our students to try a wide variety of near and distance low vision aids to determine what will work most effectively to maximize their functional vision.

Consultants are in the process of developing new curriculum materials for preschool and elementary students which include Braille, print and tactual aids to assist mainstream teachers as they work with visually impaired students.

Teacher Consultants for the Visually Impaired, in collaboration with VBISD School Nurses, provide information to the local schools about a program which provides free eye examinations and glasses for children who are not eligible for Medicaid benefits, but who have an annual family income up to 200% above the federal poverty level.  For additional information regarding this program, please feel free to contact the VBISD Special Education Department at Phone: 269-674-8091 x406, or E-mail: jerohl@vbisd.org.
