Programs and Support Services > VBISD Operated Programs > Orientation and Mobility Support ServicesOrientation and Mobility Specialists provide students who are visually impaired the opportunity to travel safely, independently and efficiently in a variety of environments. These students may range from college bound to those that are severely mentally and/or multiply impaired. Goals for these students are tailored to meet each specific need by the Specialist. Depending upon the student's abilities, they may travel in a variety of indoor, outdoor, residential, semi-business and business areas. Sensory, cognitive and spatial abilities are all taken into consideration. VBISD has many graduates from the local districts who have gone on to become college graduates. Much of the instruction of these students includes instruction in good cane skills, safe street crossings, soliciting information and utilizing public transportation as well as locating destinations that will be relevant to their needs after graduation from high school. |
