Resources > VBISD Dress Code Policy:The Van Buren
Intermediate School District is a professional organization that operates
for the benefit of students and the community. As such, staff will dress in
a professional manner appropriate to their position and model appropriate
dress as good role models for the students. In general, the following will
apply.
Clothing that exposes the backside, the midriff, or the breast-even when
leaning over-is inappropriate and is not acceptable. Clothing with offensive
messages, symbols, phrases, or slogans advertising tobacco, alcohol
products, or any controlled substance is unacceptable. Halter tops, tank
tops, and see through garments, unless worn over or under another top that
covers the body, are not acceptable. White undershirts are not appropriate
to wear as work apparel.
Jeans may be worn by staff if they are appropriate to one’s job expectations
and responsibilities and discussed with the appropriate supervisor. Pants
and/or jeans should be clean and neat, without holes or patches unless the
“patches” are part of a decoration. The “low cut, baggy” look is not
appropriate in the workplace.
Bermuda-style shorts are acceptable when warranted by the weather,( i. e.
winter would not be acceptable), the temperature of the work environment,
the physical activity of the work assignment, or when permitted during field
trips. Shorts should cover three quarters of the thigh and should be more of
a dress type except for staff conducting physical education activities.
Staff should wear footwear that is appropriate to their job
responsibilities. It is recommended that staff working with students in
wheelchairs or with students who frequently display aggressive behavior wear
shoes that cover their toes. Rubber flip-flop shoes and shower shoes are
only acceptable when staffs are working in the pool area.
Staff should be cognizant that in some situations wearing certain types of
jewelry or apparel may pose a safety hazard to themselves. Facial jewelry
such as nose rings and eyebrow rings are not appropriate or acceptable at
school for any staff member.
These statements concerning dress are not meant to cover all situations.
Fashions and trends often change more rapidly than written directives. If
there is a question as to appropriateness, staff should check with their
immediate supervisor. Staff should look professional whenever they are at
work or representing the Van Buren Intermediate School District.
