During the school year, Migrant/Bilingual staff members work directly with local school district personnel and curriculum. Instruction and activities are designed to enhance student achievement and to help eligible students meet challenging state standards. During the summer, a 7 week center based program provides academic programming to migratory children ages 3 to 21 years of age. The Migrant/Bilingual program serves local school districts in its consortium to identify, recruit, evaluate, test and server eligible migrant and/or bilingual students. A student may qualify for migrant bilingual, Title III or a combination of the programs as well as other state and federal programs. Eligibility for Migrant Education services is based on a documented move of the family into a school district to seek employment in fishing or agriculturally related work and is limited to 3 years from the most recent eligible move. Migrant Education during the school year focuses on students attending school while the summer program serves students ages 3 to 21. Migrant Education is federally funded to provide academic and support services to eligible migrant children and their families. Eligibility for Bilingual Education services, as well as the English Language Acquisition program, is based on the results of a home language survey completed by parents and, for students in grades 3 through 12, scoring at 40% or less on a language proficiency test. Bilingual services are offered during the regular school year. Bilingual Education receives state funds to provide academic services and support to qualifying students identified as limited English proficiency. English Language Acquisition or English as a Second Language is also supported by Federal Title III funding. The International Partnerships and Teacher Exchange Programs involve government entities in Michigan and Mexico as well as professional development opportunities for the respective staff members. The students in the local school districts also have an opportunity to participate based on program guidelines for participation. Click here to go to the Migrant/Bilingual Services Web Page
