AYES (Automotive Youth Educational Systems) Scholarships

John F. Smith, Jr. (JFS) Scholarship

In 2004, the AYES manufacturing partners, in recognition of the vision, commitment and dedication of the founder of Automotive Youth Educational Systems, established the John F. Smith, Jr. (JFS) Scholarship Award.

AYES manufacturing partners each commit $5,000 annually to the JFS Scholarship Award fund for deserving AYES students wishing to pursue post-secondary educational opportunities.

Deserving students must emulate the vision of Mr. Smith, including “the right aptitude and good work ethic.”

JFS Scholarship Overview

The JFS Scholarship award was established to support continuing automotive education for Automotive Youth Educational Systems (AYES) students in an approved post-secondary or related program at a college or university.

Each school year, AYES students that meet all AYES program requirements will be eligible to apply for a two-year scholarship in the amount of $5,000, and one JFS Scholarship will be awarded per participating AYES OEM partner.

Approved postsecondary programs may consist of:

  • An accredited ASE/NATEF-certified two-year automotive program at a college or university
  • An AYES OEM partner post-secondary education or pre-entrance post-secondary program as applicable.

Student must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Must be a graduating AYES senior.
  • Must have successfully completed an AYES internship.
  • Must plan to pursue a career in the automotive, diesel, or collision technical field.
  • Other eligibility requirements may be added by the awarding manufacturer.

Applicants will be judged on the basis of information provided in the application, high school transcripts, and instructor and mentor evaluations.

The top five highest scoring candidates for each manufacturer will automatically be identified as a potential scholarship recipient. The respective AYES OEM partner will make the final award selection. All decisions will be final.
Scholarship Award

Scholarships are valued at $5,000 per award.

Recipients must be attending or planning to attend a mechanical or collision/refinish automotive technician program at an ASE/NATEF-certified technical college or recognized OEM post-secondary education program.

The scholarship funds may be used to assist with tuition, fees, books, supplies/tools, or school room and board, either on or off campus.

The first award installment will be presented upon registration and acceptance as a full-time student at an approved post-secondary institution.

Subsequent award installments will be provided following successful completion of a minimum of 12 credits per semester in the mechanical or collision/refinish automotive technician program curriculum. A semester grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better, and re-enrollment full-time in the respective program classes for the next term is required.

In the event that the student leaves school, the remaining unused portion of the scholarship will be returned to AYES.

The scholarship for which each student is eligible to apply is completely dependent on the location of that student's AYES internship (i.e. a student completing a Chrysler internship will only be eligible for the JFS - Chrysler Scholarship).

Scholarship Timeline

Each school year, AYES seniors will be eligible to apply for a JFS Scholarship. Applications will be accepted from December 1 until February 28. Scholarships awards will be announced no later than June 1.
